Tjeerd Andringa — program designer

Tjeerd is a teacher, researcher, entrepreneur, and farmhand with a long history in and out of the University of Groningen.

He was one of the three young shapers of what is now the Artificial Intelligence programs of the University of Groningen. As AI teacher he has taught mathematics, neuroscience, cognitive science, speech recognition, sound recognition. In 2014 he helped to shape the Liberal Arts and Sciences program of the University College Groningen (UCG). Here he focuses on courses that help students become critical on their own thoughts and to become more respectful of (well-research or reasoned) insights of others. He does that both in the UCGproject- courses as well as in "The system view on life" in which the interconnectedness of the reality and

Tjeerd is a teacher, researcher, entrepreneur, and farmhand with a long history in and out of the University of Groningen. In the early 1990’s, after his study in physics, he was asked to become one of three first "shapers" of the "Cognitive Science and Engineering program" (Technische Cognitiewetenschap), which has now become the successful Artificial Intelligence program. He had not enjoyed the way physics was taught and when he was asked how he would set up a new program he answered: "You have to make it fun before you make it difficult." This gave him the job.

During the set-up of the program he discussed a lot about the definition of key terms like cognition and whether intelligence and cognition were more or less the same. That was at that stage both very instructive as well as too difficult. But setting up a conceptual framework for the behavioral sciences has remained a lifelong ambition, that motivated him to read far and wide to understand human behavior in all kinds of situations and times and to search for their biological and evolutionary roots. This give him also the tools to connect scientific insights across domains of expertise.

After a public lecture on cognitive science a student came up to ask about tacit knowledge (skills). She was from the Arts faculty and had never

It is the outcome of a many year process in how to be the best and most teacher he could be.
